King of the castle

Markel's name is behind a unique triathlon series that will challenge the insurance industry to show its sporting skills on land and in water.

Triathlon swimmers

What's your preferred sport? Are you a committed cyclist, a passionate swimmer, or a seasoned runner? Perhaps you're all three, in which case you would be an ideal candidate for the Markel Castle Triathlon Series.

This novel sports franchise, which focuses on castles with lakes big enough for a testing long-distance swim, is now backed by Markel and comprises five events: three in the UK, one in France and one in Ireland. Furthermore, it's a growing brand with other castles targeted in the UK and mainland Europe, and possibly further afield if suitable locations can be found. To stay true to the theme, the must-have ingredient is a castle (or castle equivalent) and a lake - with the addition, naturally, of plenty of competitors to bring it to life in wonderful settings such as Hever Castle.

Attracting competitors and an audience is the easy part, as triathlon is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world and has a huge following in the UK alone. For example, more than 5,000 people took part in castle events this year, and they ranged from novices through to elite triathletes.

The first event for Markel was at Hever Castle this September, and it drew thousands of people from across the UK. Over two days, competitors of all ages and abilities, including 50 families, competed in the spectacular grounds of Anne Boleyn's childhood home. Among them was Hugh Maltby, Markel's operations director, who took part with his sons.

"We thoroughly enjoyed the experience, the fine weather and the beautiful setting," said Hugh, "and I'm looking forward to competing in all five events in the 2012 series."

Hugh's enthusiasm is something that Markel is encouraging across the insurance industry. As an incentive, the 2012 series will include a special challenge to find the best individual insurance triathlete and the best insurance triathlon team. Although you may not make it to the Olympics in 2012, why not go for glory in the Markel Castle Triathlon Series?

If you would like to take part, perhaps forming a team with Markel, start training now. Full details on the competition, including some exciting prizes, will be detailed in the next issue of Market Matters and on the Markel International website.
