It's a knockout!

One night, seven boxers, thousands of pounds for charity. Markel scores another big hit in the London market.

Chris Eubank shows the ropes to boxers from the Fisher Downside Youth Club

Ring master: Chris Eubank shows the ropes to boxers from the Fisher Downside Youth Club

It's not every day that Joe Calzaghe and Chris Eubank are ringside for a 'small hall' event. But such was the pulling power of Showdown at St Paul's, a boxing and variety show sponsored by Markel on 27 October, that these ex-world champions turned out to lend their support and cheer seven insurance pugilists as they traded blows in front of a crowd of 500 at the Grange St Paul's Hotel.

The boxers had trained for four gruelling months at the legendary Peacock Gym, which has honed the skills of many boxing greats, in order to be ringready for their bouts on 27 October. All their hard work paid off magnificently, as it was a skilled and spirited performance by everyone who stepped into the ring – and all the more worthy because the evening was in aid of charity. It was also a tribute to Kevin Carlier, a much missed Aon broker who competed in last year's show at the Troxy and helped to inspire this year's event and motivate the boxers.

Together, the boxers raised nearly £20,000 for their individual charities while the evening highlighted the good work of the Downside Fisher Youth Club, which provides invaluable facilities and training for young people in south London. A big thank you to all those who supported the event and made it such a success – the boxers, the organisers, the trainers, the performers and, not least, everyone who came to watch and who donated to the charities. Let's put the gloves on again next year.

Fighting funds

It's not too late to make a charitable contribution. If you'd like to show your support for one of the boxers and help his nominated charity, please make a donation on one of the Just Giving pages below.
